Tower of Power Giveaway & Last Week’s Show

Posted in Radio Updates on April 1, 2008 by funkywhiteboy

Tonight on the show we’re going to be giving out two tickets to see Tower of Power at B.B. King Blues for Thursday April 10 at 8pm. Listen up and you could be at the show next week.

Those of you who listened last week will remember that we had Tom ‘TNT’ Brenneck, of Budos Band, Meenaheen (Men-uh-hen, as I learned) Street Band, and Dap-Kings fame stop by for a guest DJ set. The latter half of that set is now available for download here. Pick it up before it gets taken down for the next Night Train… (http://www.columbia.edu/~jik2105/326-nt.mp3)

Night Train 3/26 Playlist - Tommy TNT Helps Out

Posted in Playlists on March 26, 2008 by friarfunk

Thomas Brenneck, the man behind the Meenaheen Street Band and the guitarist for both the Budos Band and the Dap Kings, joined Night Train in the illustrious KCR studios to spin favorites deep from his phonographic files. We have a recording on hand for the tracks from “Funky Jive” onwards, which will be posted next week.

A smattering of 45’s fresh in from Cleveland.

James Brown: “Night Train” (7″ King 1962)

Isley Brothers: “Fight the Power Pt. 1″ (7″ T-Neck 1975)
Ike & Tina Turner: “Chopper” (7″ United Artists 1972)
Ann Peebles: “Part Time Love” (7″ Hi Records 1970)
Brick: “Dazz” (7″ Bang 1976)
Odyssey: “No One Else Part 1″ (7″ Hi Records 1973)

El Michels Affair: “Creation”
“This Song’s For You” (from Sounding Out the City 2007)

Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes: “I Wanna Dance Wit’ Choo (Doo Dat Dance) Part I
Al Green: “Ride Sally Ride” (7″ Hi Records)
Denise LaSalle: “Trapped By a thing Called Love” (1971)
Clutchy Hopkins: “Love of a Woman” (off of Walking Backwards 2008)

Thomas Brenneck, aka Tommy TNT, at this point joined us in the studio with some vinyl sides of delicious afro, soul, and dance-floor monsters.

Interview with Rich Medina Tonight

Posted in Radio Updates on March 18, 2008 by friarfunk

We’ve got a special treat for you on tonight’s Night Train, as DJ Rich Medina will be at KCR to talk about what he does - spin afro disco - and, more importantly, do it on the air too.

Across 110th St. Playlist, Interview Recording for 3/15/08

Posted in Playlists, Radio Updates on March 15, 2008 by friarfunk

If any of you missed our fantastic interview with the New Mastersounds at 1PM today on Across 110th St., you can pick it up online here. They previewed a couple tracks that will debut on their next studio album, so make sure to pick it up before the next Night Train recording displaces the link. The band is finishing up their US tour tonight, going on at around 11:30 at Sullivan Hall in the village. Congrats to Terry, who won our ticket giveaway and will get to go (with a special someone) to see NMS for free tonight.

Make sure to tune into the Night Train, my regular show, at 1AM this Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. We’ll have guest DJ Rich Medina in the studio to talk and spin.

Here’s the playlist for the day:

Bobby Womack: “Across 110th St.” (from Across 110th St., United Artists 1972)

Addiction & Funk: the Early 70’s
Curtis Mayfield: “No Thing On Me (Cocaine Song)” (from Superfly, Radio Active Gold 1972)
James Brown: “Public Enemy #1 (Part 1)” (7″ Polydor 1974)
Gil-Scott Heron & Brian Jackson: “The Bottle” (from Winter In America, Strata-East 1974)

Curtis Mayfield: “Pusherman” (from Superfly, Radio Active Gold 1972)

Live Afrobeat in NY Tonight, Tomorrow

Posted in Concerts, New Music on March 14, 2008 by friarfunk

Late notice, I know, but if your plans for tonight are as yet unformed, make sure to check out Akoya Afrobeat at Southpaw tonight. They feature Kaleta, who toured with Fela Kuti, on vocals. You can listen to them on their myspace. Doors at 8, show at 9; tickets reasonable at $10 (should be available at door too).

Tomorrow night, Shrine NYC in Harlem (none too far from WKCR) will be hosting a birthday festival featuring three afrobeat acts. Zozoafrobeat will come on 11PM, followed by The Super Powers at midnight, finished up by Amayo’s (of Antibalas fame) group Fu-Arkist-Ra at 1AM. The poster doesn’t have any ticket price listed on it, so… minimum? PWYW? No clue.

And, of course, make sure to tune into Across 110th St. on WKCR at noon tomorrow to hear the New Mastersounds interview in the studio. Plus a chance to win tickets to their show that night at Sullivan Hall.

New Mastersounds Ticket Giveaway Tonight

Posted in Radio Updates on March 11, 2008 by friarfunk

I can’t make it on the air tonight, but none other than the Funky White Boy will hold down the Night Train fort for the full four hours. In addition, he’ll be giving out two tickets to see the New Mastersounds play at Sullivan Hall this Saturday, March 15. Don’t miss it.

And don’t forget, I’ll be hosting the New Mastersounds for an interview on our sister show, Across 110th St, at noon on the fifteenth. They’re hands-down the best raw instrumental funk outfit in Britain, so make sure to tune in. We’ll be playing some tonight on the show if you haven’t heard them.
